Sesame Street has had guest stars from nearly all eras of the 20th century. It's extremely hard these days to find an entertainer with the impact and talent of someone like "Cabby" Calloway.

HeyButtahfly - I loved this one as a kid. I think I was mostly happy that there was a song on Sesame Street that had words I could remember. ;)

****
abbyroadme - I remember this from when I was kid and loved it!

****
tpirman1982 - Actually, it's 1980. I should know from the Songs From The Street album.

****
wawawis- that would make Cab Calloway 71 or 72 here. He would go on to live another 13 or 14 years.

****
zacandtaylorrule - Cab Calloway is a talent that will be missed. He was so great singing "Minnie The Moocher" in The Blues Brothers movie with Dan Ackroyd and John Bellushi.

****
Noiseworker -The song is actually called Minnie The Moocher.

****
mmmanok- No, that's different. This one's really the song called Hi De Ho Man.

****
azizip17-@mmmanok Here's some info from Cab Calloway's Wikipedia page:
"In 1931 he recorded his most famous song, "Minnie the Moocher". That song, along with "St. James Infirmary Blues" and "The Old Man Of The Mountain," were performed for the Betty Boop animated shorts. ...Calloway not only gave his voice to these cartoons, but his dance steps as well... As a result of the success of "Minnie the Moocher," he became identified with its chorus, gaining the nickname "The Hi De Ho Man". [Posted in 2010]

Bern33- This is one of my favorite tv memories from childhood =)

****
randomteen314 - Scat singing at its best

****
JayneMariefromDet - I remember this on TV. That was the first time I ever heard Cab Calloway. My little sister was really young and still watching Sesame Street back then. She would complain to my grandmother when we wanted to watch cartoons, who would then in turn make all of her grandkids aged 8 and older watch Sesame Street with my sister. :-( But THIS was a hot song. My grandmother used stuff like that to justify forcing 8 - 12 year olds to watch this show! Still, I fell in love this song.

****
54spiritedwill54- Cab was one of a kind.

****
RitchieBlackmore8855- Absolutley true, there never was or will be a second Cab! always was and will be a fan!

****
Doodlez83- nice little sanitized version of Minnie the Moocher. In other words, none of the original words, just the scatting. :-/

****
joejumps4fun- When I was little, I always thought he said "hiney ho" not Hi De Ho...now I know.

****
dyonker - Cab was awesome, what a pure talent

****
DreamDancer82- I love the Call/Response bit, and I especially love Cab Calloway's schtick. It always makes me want to join in the response part of the song.

****
WonderBooger- I wish I was as cool as Cab...

****
ashland1977 - I remember watching this episode with my Grandmother many years ago. Talk about speaking to different generations at the same time. Awesome and classic.

****
Vosk21 - Cab calloway is one of the absolute monoliths of pure coolness. And sesame street rocks for having him.

Azizip17-@trustfundmodelz08 Yes, according to Cab Calloways's Wiki page the "Minnie The Moocher" song was either made especially for or was first featured in a Betty Boop cartoon as were other songs by Cab Calloway.

****
taallman- Cab Calloway on Sesame Street. Is America great or what?

****
ngladd1- Ditto! I got to see Cab live once. He sang Minnie the Moocher with the National Symphony for a 4th of July concert on the Capitol lawn!

****
DisneyEnthusiast - Remember when brilliant stuff like this on PBS got replaced with crap like Barney?

****
tackman06- I remember. The real question is why did great stuff like this get replaced?

****
theatrebritty - Holy crap. How is it I've just now seen this man? I've heard of him, but seeing this...he is amazinggg.

****
SwingJugend - This is probably from the beginning of the 80's (around the same time he appeared in Blues Brothers), so he would be a bit over 70 in this one.

****
maxieornot - at first i thot this was gon be really awkward, then i realized,,, THIS IS AMAZING! CAB RULES...

****
PixelPwner - South Park recycled the idea with Mr.Hanky The Christmas Mess,

****
kawaii50 - I remember Sesame Street came on twice a day (same episode). I made sure to watch the second viewing so I could watch it again. Love it!

****
caloscalante1518 - cab was active from 1931 to his death in 1994...thats about the longest musical career i have ever heard of.. 63 years!!

****
ToddCMorgan- Actually he first recorded in 1930 and his first recording session produced a number 16 hit, his version of "St. Louis Blues". The same year he filled in for Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club, before later taking over as house band! He actually had two more substantial hits after that, before recording the original version of his huge, career defining smash "Minnie the Moocher" in march of 1931! But yeah, his is the longest career I can think!

****
JubalCalif - Heavens to Murgatroid! Cab Calloway...the King of Cool...on Sesame Street! Guess they gave him this song to do because "Minnie the Moocher" would have been much to risque for the kiddies. Amazing that the late great Cabs still had such awesome energy so late in life. Truly he was a force of nature. THANKS for sharing this delightful clip with us! And may ALL your wishes & dreams come true in the New Year! :)

****
Chainsawhandsbzzz- This is the sweetness. I love cab

****
hollywoodhottie19- Cab Calloway, may he rest in peace, was the definition of Cool..
